This prompt can be a bit of a pitfall for the unwary. It seems to help invite the applicant to publish about any of the hot issue issues of our time : war, environmental degradation, immigration, etc. But remember that the purpose of the admissions essay is not dependent on the essay punctual.

Now take a look at the following cracking open paragraphs. Which one is much more compelling?
As the US is constantly on the deal with the ramifications of 9/11, immigration policy has grown to be an increasingly important issue. With regard to states like California, it’s particularly important because insurance plan changes can have dramatic effects on their economy, employment rates, and culture. Although some sort of liberal immigration policy may have potentially negative effects, it is important to keep in mind that the US benefits from the influx of new blood with beyond its borders.
Immigration policy is an issue that’s important to me personally. In 2003 my family and I departed our home in Colombia to move to the United States. I recall my mother telling my cousin and I to say farewell to the home we spent my youth in. I knew that we were moving away for a better life, but I could feel emotion welling all the way up in me as I noticed our home for the last time.

I would never have dreamed which seven years later I might be graduating from a great American high school and signing up to college to study molecular biology.
See the difference? The first paragraph is generic and sends very little about the author, although second paragraph tells this reader about one of the most important events in the author’s lifetime (and sets up the construct for the rest of the essay).
Never worry if you haven’t moved here from South America. You don’t need to have had that sort of practical experience to write a great college essay.

That purpose is: share a personal message to the admissions committee. Therefore choose a theme that is personal to you in the sense that it has impacted your life directly. You can usually connect your chosen topic to your larger “issue” for intentions of addressing the composition prompt.
Imagine that you are a great admissions officer tasked with reading several thousand admissions works.

Just keep in mind that your job may be to convey something personal and additionally write from the heart.
